Subject: 11/9/96 You Enjoy Myself Date: Sat, 2 May 1998 08:24:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Dirksen 11/9/96 The Palace, Auburn Hills, MI Thanks to Mitch Kalmar for the tape! The very opening of this YEM (first minute) isn't all that tight. Trey isn't as clean as he usually is. The pre-Nivana section is spacey and enchanting, though, as it has usually been for the last several years. "Nirvana" at 3:37. (someone remarked that there must be a better name for this particular section, and I concur completely.. I say again that I call it "Nirvana" wholly for personal reasons; it was the first composed part of any Phish tune that caught my attention in 1989) Gorgeous.. wonderful Page. Mike's solo section occurs at 4:20, and Mike melodiously solos in the higher octaves of his 'doc, which he doesn't usually do. Pre-charge section is next, and the trampolines are obviously brought out (crowd goes crazy on this DFOB), as they *always* have been (as far I'm aware) in this section. Trey's first shot at The Note is good and is jammed around well. Good pre-charge section. Second shot at The Note is sustained.. "Boy" at 6:57, after a hearty scream. Ultra-groovy, funky WUDMTF segment, with some nice clav work from Page at one point, shortly before the tramps section begins at 9:07. Signals from Mike for the trampolines moves. Excellllent soloing from Page. Jam segment appears to start at 10:45 with queer, mysterious chords from Trey, and some strange, hooty, owl-like noise that I've never heard in YEM before, every couple measures. Trey begins soloing around 12 mins or so in the lower octaves of his 'doc. Nice funky groove that kicks the pants off of the Funk Groove from the Possum->Cavern the other week in Providence, imo. Strong upbeat accompaniment from Mike, Fish and Page. Trey's soloing around 13 mins has become increasingly mellifluous, but he still hasn't found a theme.. by 13:45 he has but it isn't too catchy. Serious Oye Como Va chords from Page around 14 minutes. Trey is still working his way up the octaves of his 'doc, soloing a la Carlos Santana. Finally, by around 14:53, the jam begins taking off (and Trey very quickly quotes the Spooky melody line, and I'm *not* making this up) and climaxing frantically!! Excellent closing jam (15:25) ensues with powerful, *raging* effort from all hands. At 16:04 Trey sustains out, and moves to his mini-kit. Mike begins soloing phaaaaatly, working it... FIERCE B&D segment. Trey is just POUNDING that mini-kit, and Fishman complements Mike very powerfully. There's an especially intense groove in this B&D around 17:30 that I can't put into words. It soon ends, but this ferocious B&D -- with one hell of an active MIKE -- still really wails!! =^] Page complements this jam *really* well, too!! Just a rager of a B&D, until aroudn 19:44, when it begins to die softly into the closing WUDMTF segment at 19:50. Vocal jam ensues 16 seconds later as usual, and it starts much like many other vocal jams around this period, viz., with SHH-CHH-SCHHH sorts of sounds very quickly shwooshed out. Decent vocal jam, but not all that exciting or interesting, imo. (it is short at least) Total time 23:58. This version started out typically, but given the strength of the jam segment and the B&D segment in particular, it'd be criminal not to give this an above-average-great rating.. B+ easy. Definitely not a "must-hear" version, though, in my opinion, unless you crave spectacular B&D segments. Your basic 1996 YEM. two cents charlie
