Antelope in Review Pt.7 3/13/92
Greetings everyone!

This is the 7th edition of AIR, and today I will eat my own words!!!
As recently as today I posted a note to the rmp denouncing BBFCFM as the
worst song Phish plays, and here I am doing a review of an Antelope that
jams into and out of it.  Not to say that I like the song now, but I do
think that this particular jam (RLAA > BBFCFM > RLAA) is pretty damn nice.
I saw some netters mentioning this show’s Antelope out there and people
have suggested it to me personally, so I thought I would take a listen and
tell you what I thought of it....

Just a brief note before I start- I want to make it _clear_ that when I
make comments about band members playing crappy, being asleep during the
song, or just plain making mistakes, I honestly don’t mean to cut them
down in anyway...  I mean, I know they are under intense scrutiny (from
people like myself) all of the time and I never intend to apply pressure
or infer that they should do this or that... I am just attempting to
describe the music as I hear it.  = )

Anyway, lets get to it!  This is a really renown show, with lots of HQ SBD
copies circulating... pretty intense and lots of fun.
I don’t know if I can keep up with the tempo in this sucker, but let’s
just see, shall we?

HPB says:

3/13/92  Campus Club, Providence, RI
1:      The Curtain, Split Open and Melt, Poor Heart, Guelah Papyrus,
Maze, Dinner and a Movie, Divided Sky, Mound, Fluffhead, Run Like an
Antelope > B.B.F.C.F.M. > Run Like an Antelope
2:      Wilson > Brother, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, The Landlady,
Lizards, My Mind’s Got a Mind of its Own, The Sloth, Rift, Cold as Ice >
Love You > Cold as Ice, Possum*
E:      Contact, Fire
* Trey explains the “Secret Language.”
--Fluffhead:  Decent and solid version (although I’m no expert) but at the
end there is this really long Wizard of Oz tease on his guitar and
everyone joins in:
Wizard of Oz... because of the wonderful things he does... rolls into:
--Antelope -- Intro:  Pretty friendly and lots of Wizard teasing in the
opening.  Simpsons tease with DOH!  In the intro!!!  Wow!
Very good, nice work from everyone right on time and then some stammering
from Trey before the transition.

Opening theme: (2:18) Really smooth with some very exploratory lines from
Trey.  This really unusual because he really likes to stay away from the
crazy stuff at the beginning.  But anyway!

Trill!: 2:46  pretty well executed, directly tumbling towards:

Key Change to Em:2:51   Sustained note from Trey!  We hear lots of strange
Trey notes and Page is wondering where this will lead.  Trey is really
feeling his oats today.  I can hear so many little adventurous notes and
unusual guitar work, this is really exceptional, definitely foreshadows
tonight’s creativity to come.  Really steady now with lots of good stuff
from Page backing Treys trip!  He is really in left-field, heading for the
fence!  Page says, screw it, and joins him in on the grass.  Mike and Fish
are just trying to keep things together but they are right on doing a
wonderful job!  Trey is expanding now in a repetitive phrase, but it
sounds really unique, a nice run on the guitar.  The phrase builds upward
and we have:

Second Gear: 6:50  The intensity is building by the second as Trey is
spiraling upwards in a maddening manner approaching...

Third Gear: 7:30 a brief visit, maybe you wouldn’t even call this another
gear but then...

Pre-Marco-Groove: 7:45  Seems OK at first, but then instead of Trey
stepping off as usual, he gets very rowdy and starts ripping out screeches
like he was Hendrix or something.  Then I hear this:  Bahhhh... Bahhhhh...
Bahhhh...
Bhaying like a sheep from someone!! Then a pickup in intensity, seems like
we are out of pre-Marco, but then it falls down again.  More Bhaying!!
Wild lines from Trey!  Explosions of sound that just melt in the ear...
Mike is all over it with his own mind-splitting bass-bombs.  Page gets
funky patting on the B3 like mad... This is very trippy and utterly
strange.  What is strange is that the master of disaster Fishman is not
really prevalent in this mix up!  The pre-marco is now very long and not
heading into previously charted territory... a tease of something, I can’t
put my finger on it!  Oh, this jam is just too much.

We are melting away in pre-marco land... but then a dramatic turn of
events!!!  Trey kicks in with...

BBFCFM!!! 11:30 --  the standard first verse(?), really wild as usual and
very hard, and also very annoying (imho)...  then this theme emerges from
someone chanting over and over:
12:00
why oh why, oh why, oh why, oh why, oh why,
-which turns into- Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii , let’s go to Hawaii, Honolulu,
Wikiki!  Let’s go to Hawaii! How are you!  How are ya!

This show has gone over the top!!! This is totally insane!
Brief tease and then... out of BBFCFM into:

Antelope-- 1250  They rip back into the Em theme with the greatest of
ease.  This is shaping up to be one of the greats, imo, and I can’t help
but like the change up.  Ultra-solid and commanding jam now.  Trey and
Page are on top of the world.  Trey then sits down and starts to tease at
something very stupid, I think the whole band can’t believe it... the
whole band stops.... then picks up again.  A mad run and then another
sudden drop off to:

pre-Marco-groove 1340 :  Fish (or someone)starts in immediately: When we
go out to eat what do we do?  I try to kill you!!  Why?  Why?  Why? do I
try to kill you?  do I try to kill you?  Then they go back to:

Em Theme;  Another brief visit and the jam dissolves!  Am I going mad?
It drops off again, and...

pre-marco groove: 1515  Page and Trey are setting the rhythm with a
chopping motion.  Mike is designing and shaping the groove as usual and
Fish is creating a really fine ambiance.

finally! Trey:- Ry, Ry, Rocco!!

MARCO ESQUANDOLAS: 1556  (yes!)

Happen you to have any spike, man?

Gear Shift Theme: 1617   Standard theme here.  The -Runs- are very
enthusiastic and this version definitely deserves a nice ending.

Trey:- Set the Gear shift:  1645  Run Like an Antelope out of control!
Very together and no flubs to the finish...

End: 17:55  (simpson’s tease: DOH!  to end out the set!)

pretty nice, wouldn't you say?
Till next time,
Victor
